Arielle Angel: Bio
Arielle Angel (b. 1984) grew up in Miami, Florida. She graduated from New York University in 2006 with a degree in Studio Art and Creative Writing, and she is currently pursuing her MFA in Fiction at Columbia University. She has lived, for a time, in Greece, Nepal and South Carolina. She is left-handed. She is a dedicated keeper of densely handwritten private notebooks, and a writer of short stories. After making custom ketubahs for a few years, she founded Ketuv in 2011 with Maya Joseph-Goteiner.
My most recent work stems from a basic impulse to document things in order to “keep” them. It is dominated by feelings of nostalgia and longing. I am particularly concerned with the concept of “home,” and with the people and places and things that constitute “home” in the many different places I have traveled and lived.
My work usually adopts a graphic style, with black outlines and flat colors. I am often drawn to craft materials and techniques, and have used the reverse glass painting technique and the Greek iconographic style (amongst others) to explore the aforementioned themes.
I also make anagrams. Just ‘cuz.
